Diet & Nutritional Coaching

As far back as Ancient Greece, Hippocrates (c.460-370 BC), the father of Western medicine, said in his writing: “let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” He was a naturopath, a healer who worked with the aspects of diet and fasting to improve his patients’ health, as well as using massage, breathing, and bathing techniques. Thomas Edison in the early twentieth century said “the doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame and body, diet, and the cause and prevention of disease.”  In 1960 one of the geniuses of our time, twice Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling, coined the phrase “orthomolecular nutrition”.  By giving the body the right (ortho) molecules, he asserted, most disease would be eradicated.  “Optimum nutrition, along with massage therapy, correct breathing, and chiropractic care”, he said, “is the medicine of tomorrow.”

Sixty percent of Americans are overweight; many of them blame it on their “genes”. In a comprehensive survey carried out in the US, which tops the world in obesity, show that the annual intake of sugar here has gone up from 124lbs in 1975 to 157lbs in 1999.  So where is all this sugar hiding? You would be amazed at the amounts found not just in sweets or cakes, but in soft drinks, convenience foods, flavored chips and other savory snacks and condiments.  Not to mention the high amounts of sugar that our found in breakfast cereals.  What makes things more confusing to the consumer who may read food labels is that sugar comes in many different guises.

With the increase of sugar consumption about 50 percent of the nation has developed insulin resistance.  Insulin resistance occurs due to the fact that we are eating a diet excessive in simple carbohydrates that deliver large amounts of sugar into our blood streams, overwhelming the body’s capacity to handle it adequately. The liver becomes so overwhelmed it loses its ability to regulate sugar.  This causes the sugar to go straight into the blood stream the cell membrane won’t open up so that the sugar can get into the cell.  Sugar then builds up in the blood stream and the result is Insulin resistance caused by inflammation of the cell membrane.

Inflammation is the root of virtually all diseases afflicting people, and robbing them of their ability to enjoy vibrant health and energy.  The next steps on from insulin resistance are diabetes, cardiovascular problems, cancer, anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorders, to name but a few.

Lets look at the five top diseases that afflict our affluent society; Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and osteoporosis.  I am a firm believer that if you were not born with a disease then you can reverse it.  This can be done by feeding the body the way it was designed to be fed.  Good wholesome fresh foods. Sixty two percent of Americans do not eat a vegetable on a daily basis.  Ask many children what their favorite vegetable is and they will say French fries. One third of cancer deaths can be attributed to poor diet and nutrition. Today’s Standard American Diet includes 33% more dairy products, 50% more beef and 280% more poultry than our diets did one hundred years ago. Diabetes is becoming an epidemic.  Over 7 million Americans suffer from diabetes over 513,000 Americans are hospitalized each year with diabetic issues and the number is rising.

Much of the food that is consumed in this country is “tampered” with in some way or another to extend shelf life and to make it taste good so that you will keep on buying it.  Many of the foods that are consumed have “additives” in them which we become addicted to. My belief is that obesity is cased by the fact that people consume foods that do not feed the body at a cellular level, and they continue to eat because the hunger mechanisms are never switched off because we are feeding the body the “wrong” kinds of food.
